Melbourne Cup Hair Inspiration: Glebe and Bondi
Ladies and Gents Melbourne Cup is upon us! The day when around the nation we frock-up, get suited and hang together watching multimillion dollar horses gallop around a paddock topped with multi coloured jockeys. Makes me feel like I'm in the old country and of the elegance and tradition of Royal Ascot in June each year!
While there are many other races during the Spring racing carnival, it's Melbourne Cup that stops the nation and is beamed around the world. While Victorians will be enjoying a public holiday in the name of a race, how come we don't get a public holiday in NSW when the Swannies win? (although traditionally hairdressers take the day day off to party so im not complaining) Most of you will either be trotting off to work to perhaps enjoy some cheap bubbles in a paper cup at around 3pm, or the lucky ones will be skiving off to enjoy a special lunch. Wherever you will be, you will most likely be dressing up and the crowing glory of any race-day outfit would have to be what is worn atop: your hair and your hat or fascinator of choice. That's all very well but how do you style your hair to ensure your head-wear looks the best and stays put through a day of drinking bubbles and edging on your favourite filly! Here's my top tips!
Glamour waves
If you have some length to your hair and a Fascinator or small hat like appears above, this is a glamorous and romantic look. Start by spraying the shaft of your hair with some O&M Atonic, to protect it from heat and add body and shine, Wrap even sections of hair (2-3 cm pieces) around a medium-barrel curling iron like H2D for 30 to 45 seconds and hold the tips to keep it curled around the barrel. Repeat this around the entire head. Run your fingers through the curls to create waves and finish with a little O&M Original Queenie to keep your waves looking good through the day. Add your Fascinator or Hat and you're ready to go!
Sleek Side-part Low bun
The Stunning Aussie Nicole Kidman appeared as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Derby Day (Saturday 3 November) in Melbourne wearing the customary black and white, a tradition for Derby Day and channelling English lass Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. It was an immaculate hair style topped off by a striking hat. If you want to take inspiration from your Nic, here's how: You will need at least shoulder length hair for this style and a hair band and a number of bobby pins, matched to your hair colour. Part your hair deeply to one side and pull your hair firmly around to the nape of your neck. Secure with a hair band. Twist around the ponytail on itself to create bun and secure with as many bobby pins as needed. Smooth through some O&M Fizzy Logic to smooth any flyaway hairs and to add shine. A fine spray of O&M Original Queenie will fix the bun before adding your fabulous hat!
Short Hair Styles
For everyday, short hair can look striking and polished with not too much work, but what if you want to wear a hat or fascinator for a race day event? First you could go smooth and no fuss and make the hat or fasinator the real star, like the woman in the middle below! Her hair is there to provide a base to the height and colourful arrangement on her head!
Another way to wear your short hair with a hat or fascinator, is to smooth and slick your hair close to your hair, like Carey Mulligan below:
This could be achieved by adding some O&M Rootalicious to your roots, blow-drying your hair back with a paddle brush, adding a little O&M Frizzy Logic to smooth it out and finish with some O&M Original Queenie to keep the style in place and help your hat or fascinator stay on. I reckon a simple hat perched on an angle or a simple feathery fascinator would top this style off perfectly!
Best of luck on Melbourne Cup Day and please send me your tips!!

Men's Hair Trend Inspirations: Bondi and Glebe
The man was a legend. Most famously known as the lead singer of The Doors, he extended his creativity to poetry, song-writing and film directing. He was magnetic, charismatic and what about that hair? Thick, curly and wild. No wonder all the chicks wanted him. A Bad boy with all that hair.
We want to help all our amazing male clients have the hair that suits their personality and lifestyle, so here are 2 key men's trends of the moment:
1. Colour for the Lad's
We don't reserve "all the colours of the rainbow" just for the girls. We are seeing lots of guys wanting to express themselves with strong colour and cuts. Maybe having the all-round nice guy Joel Madden (married to the truly gorgeous Nicole Ritchie) in Sydney this year for The Voice inspired guys to be a little more creative with their crowning glory? While Joel was here he sported many looks with lots of colour:

Using Original & Mineral created the following amazing look:
2. Mad Men
This late 50's early 60's drama depicting the Madison Avenue Advertising industry has spurned trends in interiors, fashion and of course hair. There is the clean cut, slicked back clean shaven look shown here on Don Drapper. A neat cut teamed with a little Frizzy Logic and a little K-Gravel is all you need.
Check out the Stevie English take on the Mad Men style. A close clip above the ear and around the face, a tidy side shave and a hint of facial hair. So cool.
We love helping men look their best at Stevie English Hair. Whatever is your inspiration we want you to look your best. Call us at Bondi on 02 9387 7791 or Glebe on 02 9423 7033.

Long Hair for Women of All Ages: Bondi and Glebe
There was a time when women of a certain age were expected to cut off their long locks and be sensible. Maybe this was supposed to happen when they got married, or had kids or were older than 30 or 40. Who knows? Who cares? Because that time is gone. Long gone. No pun intended. Long hair can look fabulous on women of any age. We know best at Stevie English Hair. Beautiful long hair can be flattering and feminine or strong and powerful. The long hair trend is definitely being driven by celebrities and public figures who are leading the way and showing us how it's done. Taking inspiration from the English, here is Jane Seymour who is perhaps famous for her long hair, more than anything else. How cool is that? She often wears is out with some body and shine and in a natural brunette colour. Jane, currently in her early 60's, looks amazing, and so does her crowning glory.

40 year old Kate Beckinsale, best known for her sexy, leather clad portrayal of a vampire in the Underworld series of movie's and currently starting in Total Recall, is the poster girl for healthy, lovely long hair.

Hair Trend at Stevie English Hair: Pastels
As we muddle through a wet and cold Sydney winter my thoughts have been of summer in London not that they are having much of one ;) (come on Olympics! and of course MURRY at Wimbledon) spring-summer hair trends. One of the hot, hot, hottest trends for fashion is pastels. Think gelato hues of lemon, orange, strawberry, blueberry, apple...many of the big fashion houses presented 2012 Spring-summer collections featuring ladylike and feminine designs all in pretty pastels, which we are now been translating to hair. This is not punk coloured hair from your high school days! It's grown-up soft and sophisticated.
Pink hair has been on trend for a little while, different shades added through the crown of the head with foils, or solid "hot" pink or dip-dyed. The pastel trend is about soft, solid colour. Pretty and cool. Now we have loved the "ombre, ballaige" looks , but its time for full colours.
I love O&M and use their colours exclusively at Stevie English Hair. O&M has really become known as a natural hair care company because they work hard to reduce the harsh chemicals in their products and add lots of good things that do what they say they do. Their ethos is about challenging the artificial norms of professional hair-care with formulations that are both effective and gentle.
At Hair Expo I was excited to work with O&M’s Creative Director Janelle Chaplin, as well the headhonco's Alan Buki and Wayne Lewis from O&M, Joe Leszek from Simon Bright salon, Fred Rafidi from ToFred #nohomo and Brett Coubrough from Bcoloured. The purpose of the catwork show was to show case just what colours O&M is capable of and challenge the idea that O&M is just about natural colours. On stage I talked away the idea that a natural hair care company only has natural colours by showcasing models with hair the colour of the rainbow.
I feel like we really overachieved with colour! Check out some of these shots:I coloured all the wigs with Janelle, and Fred And all models hair was coloured in our bondi store.
The Models showcased different shades and new formulations of O&M’s colour flower. Beautiful hairstyles in the catwalk show and at the O&M stand!
So how can you work this trend? Blondes can go any number of ways. Amp it up with a canary yellow wash from root to tip. The change won't be too dramatic and will be enough to tell everyone how hip you really are. Pink looks great on blondes too as it works well if your skin has pink undertones which is something we have been smashing here at Stevie English Hair . Got mid-brown locks? Why don't you rock some blueberry or perhaps a crisp green apple shade. Coming out of winter with a dark dramatic look? How about considering a watery shade of turquoise or a violet-mauve hue? All colours were created with O&M, we are challenging conventional hair colour, not only removing harsh chemicals but creating on trend cool pastels that turn heads and rock.
We would love to help you chose your pastel
Stephen wins Apprentice Student Cutter 2012 For Stevie English Hair
Wow! It’s been a big couple of weeks leading up to Hair Expo and a very successful event. We have a star in our midst! Luvies, have you been to our new Bondi Salon yet? If you have, you would have met Stephen Grechy, our Apprentice Student Cutter of the Year, 2012. This is the second year in a row Stephen has won this competition. How cool is that? The competition is part of Hair Expo, which is always a massive time for our salon. Having Stephen win again was so exciting.
I want all my team to be the best they can be and I will always encourage them to develop their skills in wherever their passion lies. Competitions are one way to do this. The Apprentice Student Cutting Competition is conducted live on stage so you need to be able to perform under stress.
The winner needs to pull together a whole look while demonstrating their cutting and styling ability. That’s a lot of pressure for 45 minutes of work and Stephen did really well on the day. But he also did lots and lots of practice before hand. It’s not luck that he won this competition. He works really hard to develop his natural talent. He practices more than anyone else in the team and is the last one to leave at night and first in, in the morning.
To take out the title, Stephen needed to provide a finished “look” that was in line with “new seasonal hair fashion trends”. Providing his own model, he needed to think about make-up, clothing…the whole package! I love this because the competition recognises that hairstyles are an integral part of fashion. For our clients it’s not just about their hair. They are looking to create an overall look, and the best hairdressers will be able to work to a client’s lifestyle.
The other rules said he needed to adhere to were:
- Use a female model,
- Cut at least 3cm off,
- Deliver a total change of look, and
- Only use the models hair. No hairpieces or wigs were allowed.
Stephen delivered a short hair cut that was emphasised by a pink and blonde colour work he completed a few days earlier. Very “on-trend”.
Winning this competition is a fantastic launch pad for Stephen. Apart from the cool prizes which include:
- A $1,000 voucher from Excellent Edge, (the best hairdressing scissors around),
- A Moroccan Oil product pack, and
- The prized Hair Expo Trophy.
The exposure and opportunities Stephen will receive as a result of this win, will raise his profile and improve his career prospects. He got to spend half an hour on stage as part of an initiative from the Hair Expo Young Superstar, which showcases up and coming hairdressers doing “cool” work, and was invited to work backstage at the recent Astra Awards
Congratulations Stephen from everyone at Stevie English Hair! If you would like to get your hair cut from an award winning hairdresser please call our Bondi Salon on 02 9387 7791 and book in to see Stephen!
Stevie English Hair Trend: The Quiff :
Let me introduce you to the modern Quiff not to be mis-named the Quaff That’s for enjoying a bevie or two ;) Meet the Quiff, the new hair trend being sported by many a celeb. It’s a bit 50’s, a lot rockabilly but has a very HOT RIGHT NOW. Look at English lovely Carey Mulligan. Her take on the Quiff is modern but also soft and a bit romantic, which is worn with a ponytail. Very on-trend.
Gwen Stefani would have to be the Queen of the Quiff wearing her platinum blonde hair with tousle and texture.
And how bout local beauty Cate Blanchett? Her quiff is elegant and high fashion. #WINNING!
With many ways of wearing the Quiff it can suit most anyone because it’s a clean style that opens up the face. It can particularly look good on people with a more rounded face as it adds height.
To get the look:
1. Start by using O&M Rootalicious through the roots of your hair. This will create an invisible base that will help lift the hair and support your quiff, and then douse the hair in O&M Atonic to add body this will create the perfect combination of light weight products for hold and stability.
2.Now using the GHD gold mini styler to create curls and waves through the front of the head to create volume and texture.
3. Tease the roots slightly then run your hands through your curls which will create texture
4. Use hair pins to secure the quiff in place and finish with a spray of O&M Original Queenie to keep any flyaway hairs in place.
The Quiff is not just for the red carpet. Wear your quiff as an alternative to more structured up-dos, say to a wedding or cocktail party or a textured relaxed Quiff would be great for weekend outings.
Where would you wear the Quiff?
Stevie
Are you In a Royal Rut?
As a “pommie”, it’s been wonderful to see the great excitement around Lizzie’s diamond Jubilee. It’s really been a celebration of everything English! The fan fair and ceremony, the union jacks flying proudly, the English Geezas ( not sure you can royals Geezas...) looking so smart in their regal get up and Kate and even Camilla looking elegant….
And of course Queen Lizzy dressed beautifully, always in gloves and a hat, with her bag in the crook of her arm.
Blue has always been a great colour for Liz.
One thing that struck me over the weekend was that Lizzie hasn’t changed her hair-style in years….decades… and it got me wondering how many of you are stuck in a hair-style rut? It’s easy to have the same hair-style day-in, day-out….there are lots of advantages….um..lets see…
- It’s easy to do every day – you don’t even have to think about it
- You know what hair products to buy…
- Your hairdresser knows exactly what to do
- It’s easy…oh wait I said that…hmmm…
Look if you are getting about with hair from the 80’s or 90’s it’s time for a change. I also believe that if you look back 5 years and your hair and makeup is the same, its time for a change. The Queen might be able to get away with it because, well, she’s the Queen, and she gets to wear a crown, and well she is on money so she can't change her hair like lady Gaga. Most of us benefit from mixing it up from time to time. Here are some good reasons why…
- A change will make you feel great! Nothing better than a new do to spice up your life.
- Chances are your current hair-style may not suit you any more. We all change over time (body shape, colouring and lifestyle) and sometimes the hair-style that suited you, say in your 20’s, is just not going to cut it in your 40’s, 50’s and beyond!
- Fashion changes - You know it. Hair styles and fashion go hand-in-hand. Time to get current. Rather than waiting to be cool again!
- There are so many options now. Short, mid length or long, and the variety of colours are astounding and easy to achieve and maintain!
- As the weather closes in and you are stuck indoors more you can go for a more styled and polished look as it won’t get wrecked by heat and humidity.
So how do you work out how to change your hair-style? There’s a few ways I like to suggest.
1. Check out your favourite celebrities. They get access to the best hairdressers and stylists and are often wearing the latest styles and colours.
2. Check out your friends and work colleagues what do you admire about their hair? Could that work for you?
3. Think about your lifestyle. How much time and energy are you willing to invest in your “do” each day? How often do you want to visit the hairdresser's to keep it looking fresh?
4. Lastly my favourite tip, come in and see us at Stevie English Hair. We LOVE doing makeovers. If you would like a change, massive or subtle come see the clever teams either in Glebe 94237033 or Bondi 93877791.
This weekend is hair expo So the teams area out watching, educating, competing and for good measure a little partying everything hair.

A Royal Celebration
We are about all things English and Royal at Stevie English Hair. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for 60 years? She celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this weekend in London and what a party it will be be! I'm almost sorry I'm not in England, the flags flying. Now I love Australia but what a great sight it will be.
At 86 years of age she has witnessed amazing social change and world events during her reign. She has achieved this with dignity and composure, with a cool set and an array of great hats.
The Royal family has been a source of fashion and style inspiration over the years, however it’s not been since Princess Diana have we seen someone reinvigorate Royal style as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge or ‘Kate’ has done.
Kate somehow manages to fuse Royal conservative elegance and modern fashion-forward sophistication that is copied and commented on all around the world. She always appears immaculately dressed with her tresses well cared for. I love that Kate’s hair styles are natural and attainable.
Kate knows what suits her, while keeping her look current. Starting with mid-length glossy brown colour her go-to look is down, framing her face with big natural curls which give body and shine. I reckon she has had an Original&mineral CCT™ clear gloss ;)
To create Kate's look we would put Rootalicious through the roots and then douse ends in Atonic for foundation. This will help create a big and bouncy blow-dry look which will work from day through till night! And of course a little magic from #TeamEnglish . I would finish the look with some frizzy logic and a little spray of Original Queenie for good measure. Now that might seem like a lot of product. but products are the corner stone of great styles, and a great hairdresser should help recommend products to help you recreate your style at home.
I’m sure that Kate will continue to impress with her fashion style during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Would you like to emulate Kate’s glossy locks? Would you like lovely shiny hair like Kate?
In celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and all things English I’d like to invite you to indulge in one of our Royal Treatments at our Glebe or Bondi Salon. To get a clear gloss valued at $50 all you have to do is come in and have another service, blow-dry or haircut. Please call Glebe 0294237033 or Bondi 02 93877791
I'm a royalist and I want to send a warm congrats to Lizzy,"Good on ya as they say in Oz. You are one top Sheila."
Hot trends in Glebe and Bondi for Hair
There’s a chill in the air, what about your hair?We are heading into duvet weather down-under (that’s doona to you Aussie’s). The sun is rising later and the water temp is dropping lower for my morning surf. Time to get out my steamer! The leaves on the trees outside our Glebe salon are turning orange and there are more coats and scarfs on people wandering past our new Bondi store. I have noticed many of my clients wanting to change their hair for winter. It’s a great opportunity to go a bit darker and look a bit sleeker or perhaps get a dramatic new cut. If you are looking for a change here’s a few ideas for the coming season: Bangs or as we say in England/English Fringes are back baby! Yes the fringe is back with a vengence. A little more high maintenance, as regular trims are a must to keep it looking good, at Stevie English hair we give you 2 free Fringe trims between haircuts! This look is grown up and dramatic, particularly when teamed with glossy colour the darker hair does shine more and perhaps a Lob (a longish bob) as seen on Rose Byrne. I love clear glosses to add extra shine.
Rock the Pony
We have a bit of a Glam/punk asthetic going on at Stevie English Hair and the ponytail is a great fit, and of course we love Kate Winslett . For you lovelies with longer locks a high ponytail works great with a bulky warm scarf around you neck to frame your face. And it’s easy to do and suits everyone. A bit of Original Queenie to keep your fly-aways in check, if you have fine hair, or some Frizzy Logic for curly-heads to add some gloss, and you are out the door!
Colour me up
Winter is a great time to go a bit deeper and dramatic or stand out with a bright Dip-dye. Even light haired lasses like Gwyneth, can pull off a Dip-Dye/Balaige and keep it looking fresh.
I prefer the brighter looks #TeamEnglish
Off with the pixies Sometimes a change of season begs for a new cut, and the pixie is as hot as it gets, as the chill sets in. It’s a brave step but the result can be life changing. English lovelies Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan and Sienna Millar are rockin’ this look can i hear #TeamEnglish I watched Jimmy at the Bondi store chop 2 girls hair off in pixie fashion.
Treat it well good (The secret to hair) If you love summer as much as I do and spend every spare second at the beach or in the pool, your crowning glory might be feeling and looking a little parched. Now is the time to invest in some deep protein and moisture treatments and get your locks back into tip-top condition. I recommend Seven Day Miracle for moisture they can re-energise any curl and The Power base for the Big blondes from O&M or come into the salon, relax with a cuppa or a wine and enjoy a “To the Manor Born” style super moisturising treatments. I can do anything with hair as long as the quality is there. Treat your hair. Cheers Stevie
The Voice or Maybe the Hair
You may have noticed a new talent show started this week on Channel 9, The Voice . It has a few stars on it. There’s Seal, who up until recently was Mr Heidi Klum. There’s Country Music star Keith Urban who is married to your Nic. Good Charlotte front-man Joel Madden, famously keeping house with Nicole Ritchie and their two adorable kids and i have to say my fave have on the show, and Delta Goodrem, multi-platinum chart-topper singer-songwriter pop sensation and she was on neighbours! I don’t think you could fit any more stars in that line-up if you tried. We have also seen some awesome and inspirational singing talent, and it’s only the first week! But for me the biggest star is Delta Goodrem’s mane of waist length curled locks. They are feminine and Bo-ho yet current and polished. For anyone lusting after long luscious tresses I imagine it would have been torture tuning into The Voice this week.
If you have long hair, does it sing like Delta’s? Longer hair takes a little more care, but the results can make you a star!
Here’s my top 3 suggestions to get your mane in tip-top condition:
1. Start with a masque. The Power Base from O&M, used twice a week repairs and restores and smells oh-so-good. Its a must for blondes. A protein treatment such as this will keep your hair shiny and easy to style. 2. Trim it up. Just a centimetre off the ends will tidy it up and keep you looking polished. 3. To get great tousled hair like Delta you need a serious light weight foundation product like Atonic from O&M now you can use loads of this product! Its brilliant. Not heavy and perfect for Almost any style. Finish off with O&M Original Queenie to hold style
We love Deltas hair at Stevie English Hair none more than Stephen in the Bondi Junction salon and Joel in Glebe legends of the blow-dry . #TeamEnglish
